Greetings from Gurupriya Vision Research foundation (GVRF), the public charitable trust of Radhatri Nethralaya, an eye hospital in India which offers free treatment to preterm babies of underprivileged parents with the blinding condition called Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP).

Sharing the heartwarming story of Rachel, an abandoned female orphan from Meghalaya, in Northeastern IndIa who underwent free vitrectomy surgery under general anaesthesia for Stage V ROP at Radhatri Nethralaya under the aegis of GVRF.

A very happy news one of my friends acquittance is adopting Rachel.

American family mam. They’re loving Rachel like anything. The story of baby’s ROP surgery and all the extraordinary efforts reached the family and they got so empathetic towards Rachael, and decided to adopt her mam.

The Story of Rachel.

Rachel was an abandoned orphan from Shillong, Meghalaya. She had developed Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) and lost vision in both her eyes during the pandemic. Due to the Covid restrictions, it was difficult to get her operated.

That is when Dr. Vasumathy from Radhatri Nethralaya stepped in and conducted the surgery in both her eyes at no costs. The surgery was conducted successfully and Rachel’s eyesight was restored. Post her surgery Rachel has been happily adopted by parents in Texas and is leading a happy life.

When we heard about an year old orphan child from Shillong “Rachel and her slowly losing her vision due to ROP.

We so wanted to help her but we were clueless about how to proceed with the surgery. as it had several challenges especially with the treatment and the finance part. We approached several doctors but they said this condition can’t be treated as the surgery had to be done within 6 months of the baby’s birth.

When we approached Dr. Vasumathy she quickly gave us an appointment at the earliest date and straight away declared that the surgery would be done free of cost. All the doors opened before us, we felt so relieved. Immediately we brought the child here. The surgery was scheduled the very next day and the surgery was done with utmost care and affection.

Doctor Vasumathy mam, an Angel in disguise (This is being said by most of them who heard Rachel’s story) Entire hospital, hospital staffs, and the nurses were so kind enough and accommodative. The note will be incomplete if I don’t mention Brindha mam’s support. She is the sweetest lady I’ve ever come across in life, she was so patient and loving in explaining all our doubts so patiently and she explained to us everything in a very detailed way. Radhatri Nethralaya the name is very close to our hearts now. God bless this beautiful Radhatri Nethralaya team with countless blessings.”
